Joe & Jennifer Maxwell
Joe and Jennifer Maxwell were married in 1997, we have 3 wonderful and amazing children who are all adopted and 2 of which still live at home. A year and a half after adopting our first child we decided to take our first position working as Teaching Parents in a Group Home for Adriel, in West Liberty, OH. Our thoughts at the time were, “this is a great JOB, that we can work together and help children at the same time. “ Over the years and with great insight from experienced and long term Teaching Parents as mentors we have realized that this is not a job, it is a way of life, one that we are grateful to have been blessed with over the last 8 years.
While working at Adriel, we ran a Co-Ed group home for 7, however the majority of the time our home was full of girls. We worked with Adriel for 2 years prior to accepting a position in Calgary, Alberta Canada, working with Closer to Home Community Services. While working there we were given many opportunities to help children in need. Our home again was Co-Ed, for children between the ages of 6 and 12, with the exception of children with developmental delays. After 4 years working with Closer to Home in Calgary, we were longing to return the United States, however our desire to continue helping kids never left us.
After returning to the U.S. we again worked with Adriel Inc. providing foster care. However our hearts have been with the children that require group home care. We are excited to have the opportunity to open “Our Home” as a group home, and to continue to provide this level and quality of care to these children.
We are licensed for 5 youth between the ages of 8 and 18. Programs and activities that we provide are based on the interest of each child. We encourage individuality and the opportunity to participate in the activities of their choice. We also provide opportunities in the home for creativity, with arts and crafts. Opportunities for community involvement and appreciation include volunteering, with supervision. Gardening will be provided each year, plants and flowers.Children will have the opportunity to learn about animal care and responsibility, with the animals on the farm. Some of the community activities that children may like to participate are as follows:
