Our Story

Helping Ohio Youth Find Stability, Skills, and a Stronger Way Forward

At The Ohio Teaching-Family Association, our work begins with a simple belief: young people can thrive when they are surrounded by structure, dignity, and consistent support. We were founded to bridge a critical gap for Ohio youth who need more intensive therapeutic care than traditional foster care can provide. From our location on Waterville Swanton Rd in Swanton, OH, we serve court-referred youth ages 6-21 through a stable, family-style environment built around the Teaching-Family Model, relationship-based healing, and practical life skill development.

Why We Were Founded

The Ohio Teaching-Family Association was created because some youth need a higher level of care, but they still need something that feels steady, personal, and human.

Many of the young people referred to us have experienced complex challenges. They may be involved with county courts, state agencies, or Family and Job Services. They may need therapeutic support, behavioral structure, emotional consistency, and trusted adults who know how to help without giving up on them.

Our mission is to provide that kind of place.

We are not here to simply supervise youth. We are here to help them build the skills, confidence, and emotional stability they need to return to their communities with a stronger foundation.

How Our Work Has Grown

Since our inception, we have grown from a local residential initiative into a trusted partner for county and state agencies across the region. Over time, we have refined our use of the Teaching-Family Model and strengthened the systems that help us provide safe, structured, high-quality care.

That growth has never changed our core purpose.

We still believe every youth deserves to be treated with dignity. We still believe stability matters. We still believe meaningful progress happens through patient, consistent relationships.

For us, success is not just measured in completed placements. It is measured in better choices, calmer responses, improved relationships, stronger coping skills, and the moment a young person begins to believe a different future is possible.

What Makes the Teaching-Family Model Different

Our approach is grounded in the Teaching-Family Model, a research-validated model focused on positive reinforcement, skill-building, and relationship-based healing.

Unlike standard residential programs, our work is highly intentional. We use structure not as punishment, but as support. We teach practical life skills. We reinforce positive behavior. We help youth understand expectations, practice better responses, and build trust with adults who are consistent and prepared.

The model works because it does not reduce a young person to their behavior. It looks at the whole person and asks, “What skills, support, and environment does this child need to move forward?” That question guides our daily work.

Specialized Support for Court-Referred Youth

We specialize in court-referred youth programs, which means we understand the legal, therapeutic, and agency-related needs that often come with placement decisions.

County caseworkers and state agency representatives come to us because they need a provider that can handle complexity with professionalism and care. They need clear communication. They need a safe environment. They need a team that understands both the human side and the system side of youth placement.

We work closely with referring professionals to make the intake process as transparent and steady as possible. From the first conversation, our goal is to understand the youth’s needs, placement history, behavioral concerns, and long-term goals.

The Values That Guide Our Care

Our work is guided by dignity, structure, and the belief that every young person can thrive when given the right tools and a supportive family-style environment. Dignity means we see the person before the problem.

Structure means we provide clear expectations, routines, and boundaries that help youth feel safer and more grounded. Support means we show up consistently, even when progress is slow or challenging. These values matter because youth who have experienced instability often need adults who are both compassionate and dependable. Our team works hard to be both.

Our Team and Culture

Our team is compassionate, highly disciplined, and deeply committed to the long-term success of every child in our care. This work takes patience, resilience, training, and a genuine sense of calling.

We employ professionals trained specifically in the Teaching-Family Model and therapeutic crisis intervention. That training helps us maintain a high standard of safety, care, and emotional support.

When we welcome new team members, we look for people who are steady, neighborly, and committed to the details. This is not work for someone who only wants a job. It is work for people who believe young lives can change when the right adults stay present.

What Agencies and Families Can Expect

During the first interaction, agencies and families can expect radical transparency, a professional intake process, and a reassuring, neighborly approach to complex situations.

We will discuss current availability, the youth’s needs, relevant legal or therapeutic requirements, and whether our environment is the right fit. If concerns arise during placement, we maintain communication with caseworkers so behavioral or placement challenges can be handled with therapeutic integrity.

Our commitment is simple: we provide a safe, structured, nurturing environment that prioritizes the physical and emotional well-being of every youth.

Our Community Roots

We have been a dedicated fixture in the Swanton community for years, serving youth, families, caseworkers, county court systems, and state agencies throughout the region.

Our local reputation has been built through stability, communication, and dependable collaboration. Professionals continue to recommend us because they know we take placement seriously. They know we keep open lines of communication. They know we work through challenges collaboratively rather than leaving agencies or families in the dark.

That trust matters to us. We understand that every referral represents a young person who needs help and a professional trying to make the right decision.
