Hartman Home
Before joining the Ohio Teaching-Family Association in 2002, Fred and Sherri Hartman had been Family Teachers at Girls and Boys Town in Omaha, Nebraska for 15 years. The Hartman Group Home is situated in Springfield Township in a large home on a quiet cul-de-sac. Fred and Sherri trained their daughter Amy, son Jason and his wife Holly to work with the boys placed in the Hartman Group Home. Amy has a degree in Elementary education and has worked for the Hartman Group Home since 2002. Jason started working for his parents in 2003 and Holly has been working with the family since marrying Jason in 2007. Sherri trained the new generation of leaders well prior to retiring. She now enjoys being a support to her adult children and grandchildren.

The Hartman Group Home staff are trained in professional techniques to provide compassionate and quality care to youth. The staff have each been trained in therapeutic practices for Trauma Intensive Care. They teach social skills, independent living skills, provide academic supports and facilitate relationship building with the youth’s family and friends.

The Hartman Group home is located close to schools, jobs, services, and the YMCA. The Hartman’s and the boys in their home enjoy participating in outdoor activities including picnics, hiking, fishing, kayaking, swimming, and bike riding. The boys are given opportunities to participate in community functions, church, and extra-curricular activities and sports. The boys also enjoy playing board games and video games. Amy and Holly have continued Sherri’s traditions in celebrating birthdays and holidays. They have created a comfortable environment for the youth in their home.

Trauma-Informed Youth Care That Teaches Real Skills

At the heart of our work is trauma-informed youth care. Many young people entering placement have experienced instability, loss, conflict, or other disruptions that affect how they respond to adults, rules, emotions, and relationships. We do not treat those realities as background noise. We build our care around them.

Using the Teaching-Family Model, our staff teaches practical social, emotional, and independent living skills through daily positive interactions. That includes:

  • emotional regulation training
  • social skill development
  • problem-solving practice
  • accountability and routine
  • life skills support
  • academic encouragement

This approach helps youth learn not just what behavior is expected, but how to succeed in meeting those expectations in real time. That is one reason therapeutic family-style care in Maumee, OH can be so effective for long-term change.

Why County and State Referral Partners Choose Us

Youth referred for residential placement are often navigating behavioral, emotional, or transitional challenges that require more than supervision alone. They need a setting where treatment is active, skill-building is constant, and progress is measured in ways that matter. That is why our program is built to support county and state agency referrals in Ohio with a balance of warmth, structure, and professional accountability.

We are proud to be:

  • DCY licensed
  • Teaching-Family Model certified
  • a trusted partner for county and state agencies

Our licensed professionals and trained care providers understand how to work with youth who need trauma-informed support, emotional regulation coaching, and a stable environment that encourages growth without adding unnecessary stigma.

A Family-Style Setting
With a Therapeutic Purpose

What makes the Hartman Home group home different is the environment itself. We are intentionally built around the Teaching-Family Model, which moves away from cold, institutional care and instead creates a structured, supportive home where youth can learn through everyday life. That means meals, routines, chores, conversations, and problem-solving all become part of treatment, not separate from it.

Our mission has always been to provide the least restrictive, most home-like therapeutic environment for high-risk children. We believe youth do better when they feel seen, respected, and guided by adults who are consistent in both expectations and support. That family-style structure helps reduce stress, build trust, and create space for real change.

Individualized Skill Building

Through the Teaching-Family Model, our team teaches essential social and life skills through everyday routines, relationships, and positive corrective feedback.

Progress Monitoring

We provide regular updates, documentation, and data-informed insight to the referring agency so case managers stay informed and supported.

Reintegration and Transition

Our work includes planning for successful discharge, whether that means reunification, another family setting, or a more independent next step.

A Safe, Reassuring Alternative to Institutional Care

Many traditional placements feel highly institutional, and that can make youth feel even more disconnected from the kind of life they are supposed to be working toward. Our program is different by design. The Hartman Home looks, feels, and operates like a family home, which helps lower stress and normalize the treatment experience.

That home-like atmosphere is paired with strong professional oversight, evidence-based intervention, and staff who live or work closely on-site to maintain consistency. This combination gives youth the emotional safety of a home environment while still providing the structure and treatment support agencies expect.
